Dreaming of Ice
The Greater Santa Barbara Ice Skating Association (GSBISA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a goal of promoting skating related sports and recreation. There has long been a need for family oriented activities in Santa Barbara County. GSBISA hopes to help remedy that by building a community ice skating arena for all ages to enjoy.
THE PROJECT.
GSBISA was formed to bring a broad range of skating-related activities to the Santa Barbara community, and has launched an $8 million dollar fundraising campaign for the development of the only ice skating facility between Oxnard and San Jose. Located in Goleta, near Girsh Park, the Camino Real Marketplace, and UC Santa Barbara this state-of-the-art venue will provide year-round recreation for people of all ages. User fees will cover operating costs, and a scholarship program is planned to ensure no youth is denied the opportunity to participate.
THE NEED.
Santa Barbara has a diverse population with a large number of young people, students, and families. Despite these demographics, the area is surprisingly deficient in recreational facilities and activities. As a result, people in the area have limited options when it comes to finding daily, evening, and weekend activities that promote positive, wholesome values. The new rink will fill a unique need and current void in the community, offering a variety of fun and affordable programs including figure skating and ice hockey, public skating sessions, group and private lessons, parties, exhibitions, tournaments and competitions.
THE DREAM.
GSBISA is a group of people who understand that a public ice skating arena will provide healthy, fun activities that will be enjoyed by young and old. The developer of Camino Real Marketplace, Wynmark Co., obtained approval for a 44,000 square foot ice skating arena, then installed infrastructure improvements, including mains, storm drains, and a parking lot. The site was made available to GSBISA, and the group has successfully advanced the project. Conceptual building plans have been submitted to the City of Goleta. Significant financial contributions and pledges are already in place. Currently, the Ice in Paradise campaign is $1 million away from groundbreaking, and your support is needed to help make this dream a reality.
